Random Review: Upper Deck Series One tin

Ideally I would sandwich a post about Prestige here but I didn’t open another box since my last post. Instead I give you another hockey post.
I got caught up in the Young Guns hype and was desperate to open a few packs of Upper Deck Hockey. Between Dylan Larkin’s show during all star weekend, and the seeing your pack breaks on Twitter, I have been desperate to catch this product.

It took me a while to find anything more than a few retail packs of the product because it has been sold out everywhere I go, a rarity, but I finally found one. I came across a bunch of Series One tins at WalMart. For once I didn’t care about the price so I grabbed one at $30; and with that I am on ramen and whatever is in the cupboard until the 4th when I get paid – I had an unexpected expense pop up this month. At 12 packs for $30, not a bad value though.

Random Review: 2 hockey blaster boxes

Hope that everyone had a great weekend everyone. I was busy this weekend helping a friend move – something I will probably be doing a few more times. After helping my friend move, I could really use a glass of wine or two. Unfortunately, but probably fortunately for my body, I gave up alcohol for Lent. So I traded one vice for another and bought two clearance blaster boxes from Target on my way home.

The boxes:
2013-14 Upper Deck Hockey Artifacts
2013-14  Panini Score Hockey

The big grabs the boxes:
An expired Artifacts Rookie Redemption for Capitals – if anyone knows if Upper Deck will redeem this, please tweet me – https://twitter.com/angryccollector.
Emerson Etem Rookie numbered to 999
Bryan Trottier numbered to 399

Countless Score gold cards with the highlight being a Nail Yakupov Rookie Gold
Michal Jordan Hot Rookies – sorry had to
Martin Brodeur Netcam insert
Brandon Yip Black

I finally got to open an Artifacts box, which is something that I have been wanting for a while. I would say my opinion hinges on the redemption being valid but the reality is, it is probably a crappy rookie. I am very disappointed and could still use that glass of wine. I am over blaster boxes as their is no value in them. I saved a Christmas gift card specifically for a time like this so at least I didn’t lose any money from it. I have a hunger for an Upper Deck box so I can try for a Jack Eichel or Connor McDavid Young Guns card, although I did pull an Oilers number one pick rookie card.

Prestige Boxes 3 & 4 of 12

Continuing my quest to complete insert sets, I am still opening my Prestige basketball 2013/14 case. The last post on this topic didn’t get as many views so I put the hits in bold. Again, I would never be able to afford a case if it wasn’t for saving up my Swagbucks, token referral link here: http://www.swagbucks.com/refer/pandanwh, which enabled me to earn a big Ebay gift card after 2 years worth of surveys. If this pattern continues, I will combine more boxes into a post – although I really am this slow; I am trying to keep my card buying to a minimum so I am trying to spread it out because I have no extra income as I am currently in the after college no man’s land of not having a job or financial aid to help me out.

Box 3 hits:

Every autograph and jersey was Bonus Shots
Steve Novak
Richard Jefferson
Luc MbahAMoute – I have a ton of his Prestige autographs. At first it was nice because he is a UCLA product but now its laughable – perhaps I should toss one into my giveaway pile.
Zaza Pachulia jersey
Victor Oladipo jersey

Box 4 hits
Tony Mitchell Prestigious Premiers Signatures – aleady have

Kendrick Perkins Bonus Shots autograph – needed
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist True Colors jersey – needed
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Bonus Shots jersey – needed

This is what’s great about the hobby: The Mystery Package

Happy Valentines Day amazing readers. It is a lovely day today, and I hope all of you are feeling that way. What better way to continue a great day than to highlight something amazing.
This past week has been a very long week for me, Panthers Super Bowl loss notwithstanding – I wish that was the worst thing going on. In the middle of all this interesting week, I had a package arrive at my house. Nothing special to the majority of you but this package was unique for several reasons – 1. I wasn’t expecting a package this week or for a while because of my budget being extra constraining this month and 2. The package had no return address.

Overall 6.5 again. Nothing to flashy but I got a lot of needed cards.

I was able to put together a set of base cards. This is my 2nd set. I have yet to put together a set where all of the cards were in near pristine condition. Cards in box 2 were all mint but there were a few packs in box 1 that had dinged corners.

I am not getting my money’s worth but I am getting what I need. I am glad that I used Swagbucks to pay for this – shameless plug so I could put a referral link with a hint of truth. I doubt that I will finish an insert set with this case but I have hope that I will have them near completion. I am only 2 boxes of 12 in so we will see.

Twitter Mailday

Happy Super Bowl Sunday. It’s a long wait for the game. As Panthers fan the game can’t come soon enough. In meantime, here is something for your reading pleasure:
As I always do, whenever I make buy something off a Twitter user, I highlight them because trusted traders are always good for the hobby. Today’s highlight is a deal that I made with Goldy’s Cardboard: @Goldcollectible

And now for the eye candy: a Panthers Armanti Edwards relic that I needed, Manziel relic, and Jake Locker patch. All for $4.

Check him out, he is having a huge relic sale on Tuesday. Sometimes he does shipping deals.

I did something out of character

In my last post, I said that I made a big purchase. With all the good things that happened to me in the past year, I wanted to celebrate. I ended up doing the craziest thing that a collector can do, I bought a case.
There is a great saying in the hobby that collectors should live by: collect what makes you happy and your collection will be priceless to you. About 2 years ago, I put together a set of Prestige basketball from 2013-14. I have put together a few sets, but maybe it got me at the right time because I love collecting this product and am still chasing the insert subsets. Unfortunately but fortunately for me, this is probably the worst draft class in NBA history – honestly not a stretch because there isn’t a true all star in the bunch. Don’t believe me take a look for yourself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013_NBA_draft It is the ill fated, Anthony Bennett draft class.

This is the first case that I have ever purchased. As a no budget collector, I am lucky when I can afford a box of cards. I was only able to afford the case because I used up 3 years worth of Swagbucks so I actually didn’t pay a dime and instead used a gift cards to purchase the case- please click the Swagbucks link and sign up as I will earn even more points, my referral name is ‘pandanwh.’
