I don’t like posting one off hauls on here so when I do, they have to mean something. Well I was just looking for a reason to smile and opened a jumbo pack of 2018 Topps baseball series one that I have been sitting on for almost a month. Nothing special right? Well, have you ever opened a pack of cards that was just so apropos that you had to laugh? I am not talking about hitting a great relic, I am talking about cards that mean something. Well this pack just felt like it was destined for me in this moment.
Let’s start my personal collection. I bought this pack because I am a big Ozzie Albies fan and my goal was to chase some of his insert cards. Bang, this pack gave me one of those. Now just with that, I would have been happy but there is more.
I am a big Jose Altuve fan. His rise from suspect to prospect happened when I lived in Lancaster and saw him put himself on the map with the Lancaster Jethawks, high A ball team. So I get his insert. But wait there is more.
3 weeks, Brewers cards would have no meaning to me. But now, I am watching them everyday as they play my Dodgers. If you are reading this week, you will know that Orlando Arcia has made a huge name for himself and is performing out of this world.
The cherry on top of this apropos pack is the fact that the pack yielded a Brewers team card.
The pack yielded 50 cards and was very Red Sox and Brewers heavy. The Travis d’Arnaud rainbow foil was cool.
My sister got rid of her storage and I had a few boxes of cards in there. One thing that caught my eye was a full hobby box of 2008 MLS soccer. Most would consider this a forgettable product. As I was looking at comps, it looks like one that the whole card community didn’t pay attention to it. However as I was going through it, I found a great undervalued product.
Any box that you can get a full set of base cards from is good in my book.
The base set has some great cards. I was pleasantly surprised to come across a player that I legitimately have in my personal collection in Sean Franklin. A player named Stephen King had a card made. Jozy Altidore, David Beckham, Landon Donovan, and Carlos Ruiz made an appearance.
Also the Young Guns inserts were stellar. I didn’t hit any names but I love having them as their own insert set.
My two jersey cards from the box weren’t too shabby either as I hit Jimmy Conrad and Taylor Twellman. I wish that I sleeved them but this was really my first few years back in collecting.
I remember that I bought this box for under the $30 that it sells for now.
Soccer is not for everyone, especially in North America. It has it’s place though and cannot be overlooked. We are seeing a lot of high end soccer released lately but this is a great low end product that will undoubtedly age well over time.
I won a fun contest on Twitter from Cards From The Attic. For as annoying as junk wax can be, the fun grade on it is probably my favorite versus current sets.
I actually did great in the packs. I hit a major pc card in Tommy Lasorda and pulled John Smoltz and Hal Morris rookies. I forgot about the stickers in Fleer 1989.
