Random Review: 2019 Donruss Optic baseball FOTL

This was a $100 bucks. I grabbed it because ‘First Off the Line’ was a collecting bucket list item.

2 Garrett Hampson autos with 1 being a redemption and a David Fletcher auto. Stephen Gonsalves Rated Rookie numbered to 7. I wasn’t expecting 3 huge names but this is a major bust. Major is an understatement. At a little more than $4.15 a card, I doubt that I can get that for the cards above. Plus, I got a redemption, what a joke.
The cards below are all numbered to 99. I am not sure if each color has 150 cards or if the spread it out and certain card numbers go to a certain color. Regardless, not my cup of tea.

I am so pissed off. More at myself than at Panini. I am not in position to spend a $100 bucks and I certainly feel like my FOTL premium was lacking. I was saving this to open for when I needed a smile, instead I find myself more pissed. Now if you will excuse me, I am going to go slam my head through a wall.

Random Review: 2019 Leather and Lumber blaster

This had 2 packs.

20190801_2008411611964813.jpg

One pack was just inserts. None of the inserts had the feel of the normal hobby pack.

20190801_200926-32497496.jpg

The hit was a Max Kepler jersey swatch. Also got an Judge parallel.

20190801_201023675730129.jpg

Not bad for a $20 blaster but having got into some cards from hobby packs, the differences are night and day in regards to quality of cards. Even the thickness of the hit showed as it was so thin, I thought that I was getting an autograph.

Random Review: 2013 Panini Hometown Heroes

This was buy from Blowout’s most recent sale. It is currently for sale for under $40.

People hate it when blogger’s talk card designs but these are so underwhelming to me that I need to point it out. This product had a chance to be great but the design just killed the pizzazz for me.

Random Review: Panini Blitz app Round 2

In my first review of the Blitz app, I said that I would follow up with my thoughts if I still used the app. To see my first one, you can find it here: Random Review: Panini NFL Blitz app

Capture+_2018-01-12-01-08-51

Let’s start with my thoughts and relevant information on features.

Trade: I have caught myself trading just to trade. I wasn’t trading for cards I needed because searching for them is too hard, even with improvements. I have found that cards that fall under ‘Blitz Promo’ has led to my mass confusion. If that category was eliminated or streamlined, I would enjoy it more. I would like to see rewards expanded here; perhaps for team sets. That would stimulate trading.

Case Breaker: Nice idea in context but in function it is not great. When you buy into a break they show the sorting of cards which is too slow. The prices are unreasonable; and I am not just saying that because my team is a premium team with this draft class. With the way the app is designed, there isn’t a benefit to your collection and status by just collecting one team.

Pack Battle: Cool idea but naturally glitchy since it is new. When the bugs stop, I must say that they do a good job of translating different positions to each other.

Contest: This is where the fun is for me. It is probably the only reason why I have stuck around with this for as long as I have. It is like fantasy football redux with cards.

My Status: There isn’t a reward for updated statuses. I don’t get why decision makers seem to think that status levels being upped are a benefit for people. They are not. Me having a higher level than others I know means nothing to me, or any rational person. In fact I want a lower status because it means that I have a life away from the app.

I do like how they give you options to earn money for packs instead of paying for extra coins. Since a lot of people are unaware of this feature, pictures of where to find it and what it looks like are included below.

Not enough emphasis on base cards. Autographs and game used are lost in the shuffle. It feels like they are treated with more value than base cards but less valuable than insert sets. One could argue that they are on par with inserts but to me that is a problem, as I feel they need to be treated with more value.

Overall the app does a good job of marketing current card products. Other than the fantasy like ‘contest,’ I feel the product is just another app. It does nothing else. Collectors don’t get any tangible benefits from it. Its great when I have a hunger for cards and can’t afford to buy them but that’s it.

I don’t see myself playing beyond the Super Bowl. I have said that I didn’t see myself playing much longer before and ended up playing more. Really though, I say this with a more level head. My usage of the app has gone way down. I really only open it for the contest and to claim more money for when I do want to open packs on it.

So if you want to add me as a friend on it, my username is PANDANWH. I add anyone that follows me on it and accept any trade for my doubles.

Random Review: 6 month old WalMart basketball repack

Today is another example of my tendency to not open boxes that I buy right away – for the record if I got any review boxes from companies I would open those right away, hint, hint as I know some of you read. I probably had an appetite for cards as mail didn’t come this weekend because of Veterans Day. I don’t remember how much this product was. It was probably $19.99 but it could have been $14.99. I hope it was cheaper because despite offering hobby packs, it was awful as you will see.

I bought this expecting cheap Prestige packs that would make me happy. I certainly wasn’t expecting 5 of the same packs; a flagship product with hits hard to come by.

I did beat the odds and got a Beckett rookie card that came 1 in 4 boxes.

I didn’t pull anything good. The Prizm was all base cards with a Shabazz Muhammad rookie card. Other than that, the flagship packs offered some inserts that are selling for cheaper than base cards.

I am pretty convinced that whoever made this product searched the packs to keep the hits for themselves. I highly doubt that I would pull 3 cards of the same player in the packs otherwise.

The red, white, and blue parallel was decent at least. I didn’t open it but it has Bradley Beal, Chris Paul, and Jason Kidd cards in it.

Random Review: Panini Player of the Day packs

I wasn’t expecting to open any Player of the Day packs this year but I unexpectedly ended up with some. Last week I won a Monday Night Football contest where you had to guess the number of passing yards total. I was off by one. The reward was an autograph but to my surprise they also threw in three packs.

2 cards per pack. You can see the breakdown below. In my experience the pulls on these packs are notoriously tougher than other promotions so I wasn’t expecting anything:

I will say that I was hoping to pull more rookies. 2 veterans in 2 of my packs didn’t make me all that enthralled. The rookie that I did pull is great though.

As for the autograph that I got. I was able to choose from 1 of 3 players. I chose the Haason Reddick autograph as he is one who is on my list of players that I wanted from this draft class and the others weren’t; I don’t even remember who they were but it was a Bills and Jets player. Reddick was legitimately in my top 5 autographs for this class after Watson, Engram, Trubisky, and McCaffrey.

Random Review: 2 National VIP Gold Packs

I was jealous of everyone that went to National this. They get a bunch of exclusive stuff and it looks like everyone gets decent pulls from it. So seeing that the past few years, National packs have been on my want list for ages. So when my favorite hobby shop, Valley Sports Cards posted that they had National Gold VIP packs, I had to grab a couple. I would’ve regretted it if I didn’t. So I bought 2 for $10 a pack. Here is what I pulled:

wp-image-1832711568

wp-image--1150701986

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! The Ferguson is a rookie although it doesn’t say it.  I don’t regret it. I would’ve regretted not buying a pack. I have it out of my system and now will never go out of my way to get a National pack.

So here it is one of the first posts that show nothing pulled from these packs.

Random Review: Panini NFL Blitz app

I have never been one to try card apps. They aren’t my cup of tea. With all of the hype surrounding the new NFL Blitz app, I figured that I would give it a try.

First things first, I questioned if this was a Panini app. When I see a ‘b’ with sports cards, I think Bowman and not Panini.

Capture+_2017-09-12-20-50-22

Here is a sampling of the cards in packs. This is front and back. Trying to swipe the cards to see my whole pack has been impossible. Last night I couldn’t see more than one card, today I have been able to get through three before giving up. So clearly the app is a work in progress.

There are way too many things that I don’t like about the app. Between the fact that it is slow on my brand new phone, trying to add friends is glitchy, and I still can’t get past the fact that I can’t get these cards in my possession if I pull anything good.

For example, I pulled a Joe Mixon autograph. What are the benefits to this? What good is an autograph card if you can’t have it in person? Here is another thing, when I tried to find it to take a screenshot of it for you guys, I was unable to do so. All I could find was what cards I had in a checklist. With so many variations and scrolling in the app being a work in progress, I can’t even see my own cards unless I open the trade feature. I searched for five minutes and couldn’t without it thinking that I wanted a checklist that I was scrolling by opened.

Sorry Panini but you fail with this app. Even taking away digital cards being digital cards. It feels like they rushed this app and debuted it well before it was ready. Normally kinks are manageable and to be expected for the first few weeks but I can’t see myself having much patience as their isn’t a payoff for this collector unless there are drastic changes. The fact is that a lot of us are taking a flier on this app because of it being advertised in packs. The novelty will quickly wear off for those of us who are not digital collectors. At least the cards presented in it are nice but if I wanted to look at nice cards, I would stalk a live break. My professional duties are taking care of social media for organizations. This app will be the first to go the instant that I think it is affecting the rest of my phone. As it is I am running out of patience.

Until I run out of patience, you can add me: PanDanWH. If I stay on for longer than a month, I will do another review to see how much of what I said holds up. I know that things are fluid with the app. Perhaps it will get good.

Random Review: 2- 2017 Contenders Draft Picks blasters

So, I was looking for a football set that I could get into this year loaded with rookies, and by virtue of elimination Contenders is it. I was looking for a few things: rookies, availability of blaster boxes, a great insert set, and something that would realistically not break my budget.

I don’t like that the base rookies are all autographs but I wanted a set with inserts that excited me. Contenders hits that mark. Seriously Panini, this is the best you can give me? You are releasing several dozen products and this is the only one that is loaded with rookies and realistic for a budget collector, that isn’t the flagship set.

Goals: base cards numbered 1-100 which is the non autographed base & complete the insert sets. I’ll probably accumulate a bunch of autos 101-300 over the next 5 years but I can’t see myself doing what I did with 2013-14 Prestige basketball.

Since I am going to collect this, I must say that I really like the base design. When I do sets, I plan on holding them for a long time. I like sets like this: nothing flashy with a timeless look that should hold up well with all facets of designs in this product.

How I did: 46/100 cards with 6 duplicates. Not bad
Insert sets:
Rush Week: 2/10
Game Day Tickets: 8/30
School Colors: 6/20
Old School Colors: 6/20
Passing Grades: 2/10
Collegiate Connections: 4/10

The autos: Charles Walker, left college early and appears to be undrafted and not even signed.
Joseph Yearby, great autograph but he clearly has time on his hands as he followed the exact same path as Walker.
Rushel Shell, blue parallel autograph undrafted, caught on with the Steelers, was cut Monday.
Carlos Henderson, a College Bowl Ticket REDEMPTION, 3rd round by the Broncos.

Most collectors will probably rip this just because it has 2 autographs per blaster. If that is you, I suggest that you take your chances with Sage which has a shorter checklist and less of a bust rating. After looking at the checklist and seeing what the autographs are going for, despite the multiple hits, the bust rate is huge in this product as you are looking at a checklist with about 250 different autographs. Then again, I can’t see anyone buying this product for set building unless they are crazy like me.

Overall a solid product but if you tell me that in five months, it will be hitting clearance shelves, I will not be surprised at all.

(Since I am putting a collection together for this product, I will not entertain any trade offers.)

Random Review: Black Friday 2016

I got lucky this Black Friday and a friend gave me a couple of Black Friday packs. Let’s see what I got:

Pack 1:

Pack 2:

I was given the option of taking football packs or multi sport packs. The last thing that I wanted was another event used football card so I grabbed the multi sport. The packs don’t say the odds but I know that while it might seem like everyone pulled a relic from their packs, that is far from the case. I am not sure about the design of the base cards, then again Topps 16 baseball showed us how to do a winter design. Overall though, I can’t complain.
I want to give a shout out to the people who are not hoarding their Black Friday and Cyber Monday packs. Those that are, and it appears that there is a lot of them, need to grow up and realize that they are killing the hobby.
